Trash to treasure: Fashion Industry x Circular Economy

Hong Kong

Environmental Sustainability

We aim to tackle the problem of waste generation by the fashion industry through a Business-to-Consumer platform where consumers can buy second-hand clothes, guaranteed by the fashion brands that produced them. We hope to ride the wave of evolved consumers who enjoy thrift shopping because they understand the impact fashion has on the environment around them.

Human beings have used resources freely taken from nature for millennia on end without wondering about the consequences of their actions. While it might not seem so in the short term, our relationship with nature is very symbiotic, and the actions we take today will have significant consequences on human life in the future. This is the common thread that has brought together our team to address a subset among the many challenges that threaten the environment today - The rise of fast fashion and its associated waste generation. The fashion industry is one of the world's biggest polluters today, generating large amounts of waste and greenhouse gas. Globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Even more concerning is that only 12% of the material used for clothing ends up being recycled.

Our team endeavours to promote and inceltivize circular fashion through a) adapted business and operational models and b) responsible consumption? Our solution involves developing a second-hand clothing platform, which would be in the form of an app. It would be a Business-to-Consumer platform for people to buy used clothes, guaranteed by the fashion houses that developed these clothes. We feel that having such a platform would have a significant impact on the fashion industry, where consumers would still be able to keep themselves updated on new styles and trends while the fashion industry can transition into a more sustainable way of conducting their business.
